How often do we hear from our students “I don’t know what to write!” or “I have nothing to say!”. How often do student’s reply to the question “What did you do this weekend?” with “nothing”. Generating writing topics can be a challenge and a source of frustration for kids, but it doesn’t need to be.
Make time at the start of the year to brainstorm and generate ideas. Giving students the opportunity to pause and brainstorm a list of their favorites, their hobbies, and their experiences will save you all a headache in the future! Instead of starting each writing block with “I don’t know what to write”, students can pull out their brainstorm and have a launching point for their writing! Remember to keep this sheet fluid – add and change as the year goes and the child grows.

Brainstorming ideas is just the beginning step to learning to be a Good Writer. Take time to teach your child how to edit their work. Show them how Titles and Labels can enhance writing. Make time to discuss how illustrations can support their writing, and coloring neatly will make their work visually appealing. Create a writing center in your classroom. A place where students can go to be authors and work on honing their craft. Click the images below to get your FREE copy of our GOOD WRITERS – Flipbook for Students. Above all, it is important that students learning to be writers have ample time to practice! One way to do that is to have the students each month craft one writing piece – any topic of their choice to put on display. Student’s need to see their work celebrated! At the end of the school year, staple together the year of writing (one from each month) and send home. Parents will be amazed at the progress their child has made from the first month of school to the last!
